INFORMATION: Motion 12/01/2025; File 25-20. Currently, there is significant confusion, and sometimes frustration, when we explain that residents are not permitted to have barnyard animals, even in areas zoned for agriculture. This amendment will allow barnyard animals in the City of Trotwood within the districts zoned as Agricultural (A).
The current regulation was put in place in 1987, prior to the merger with Madison Township. To the best of staff’s knowledge, the code was never updated as part of the merger. As the code currently reads, no one in the City of Trotwood is permitted to have barnyard animals of any kind. This includes farmers in the most rural and remote parts of the city. This change amends the regulation to keep the original intent, preventing barnyard animals within urban and suburban areas, while allowing anyone within areas zoned for agriculture to have barnyard animals, as is common in rural areas and farmland.
